On our last vacation to Maui I witnessed something that brought home the love and care of my heavenly Father.
There were two men sitting on the beach below our condo. One of them was in his late fifties and the other was a much younger version of him, most likely father and son. Just a normal thing to do when you’re in Maui, sitting on the beach, enjoying the view of the waves. It wasn’t until they stood up that I realized I was witnessing something special.
The older man couldn’t stand up on his own. The son patiently helped him to his feet, and with one hand gripping his, the other arm wrapped securely around his father’s waist, the young man carefully and slowly guided him to the water’s edge.
The man clearly had mobility issues, he was unable to stand on his own, but as they entered the water the young man braced his father against the waves. Each step was a struggle, but the son held him firmly upright as they slowly inched deeper and deeper. Then, once they were deep enough, the son let him go and they bobbed together, enjoying a swim.
God is just like that.
Sometimes the waves of life come crashing in. We stumble and sway and almost fall over. But God is right there with us, gripping our hand in His, arm bracing us against what life throws at us. He walks with us, never letting go, whispering encouragement with each step we take. He guides us past the rough waters of this world into the deeper water of His grace, where we can rest and float with ease.
The world, of late, has dissolved into chaos. Nothing makes sense anymore. All of the hate, the anger, the violence…none of it is what God intended, and I’m positive it’s breaking God’s heart even more than it is mine.
Dear Brother and Sister in Christ…take heart. Let God be your strength in these divisive days. Lean on Christ and let Him be your shelter from the storm. Remember, this is not our home. One day our rest will be complete, but until then, remember, there’s nothing to fear at the edge of God’s Grace.
“Trust the Lord completely, and don’t depend on your own knowledge. With every step you take, think about what he wants, and he will help you go the right way.” – Prov 3:5-6
